The cocktail bar "Lloyds No.1 Bar - JD Wetherspoon" in Nottingham, England, is a bustling pub that belongs to the well-known British chain JD Wetherspoon and is distinguished by its central location and historical significance. The building housing the pub was originally a branch of Lloyds Bank, which opened in 1860 as the headquarters of Wright’s Bank before being taken over by Lloyds in 1918. This banking history is reflected in the name, as the "Lloyds No.1" brand was first introduced here, marking the beginning of a successful sub-chain within the Wetherspoon portfolio. The pub is a Grade II listed building in the Italianate style, giving it a special architectural charm, featuring elements like decorative stucco and a former banking hall that now serves as the dining area.

Historical pubs in Nottingham

The interior of the "Lloyds No.1 Bar" is spacious and multi-layered, with several levels that offer different moods. The main bar is located on the ground floor, while the upper floors house additional seating areas and dance floors, creating a nightclub-like atmosphere in the evenings. The decor is functional and modern, with a renovation in September 2017 refreshing the space. Historical details such as Victorian tiles and the high banking hall with its Corinthian columns have been preserved, adding an air of elegance to the pub. Especially on weekends, it attracts a younger clientele, and the music – a contrast to most Wetherspoon pubs, which are music-free – contributes to a lively atmosphere. However, on quieter days, it also provides a relaxed environment for breakfast or a drink.

Best Wetherspoon bars in England

Culinary-wise, the pub follows the proven Wetherspoon concept with a focus on affordable, classic British dishes. The Traditional Breakfast is particularly popular, served with juicy sausages, crispy bacon, and a perfectly fried egg, offering a traditional start to the day. Fish and Chips is also highly favored, featuring a freshly fried fish fillet and golden-brown chips that meet the standard of good pub food. The kitchen emphasizes generous portions and solid quality, avoiding culinary experiments while providing reliable enjoyment. The menu is complemented by snacks like chicken wings, ideal for a quick bite with a beer.

Cocktail and food pairing

The beverage selection is a central part of the experience, with the cocktail bar offering a broader range than many other Wetherspoon locations. In addition to a selection of real ales – including permanent options like Ruddles and changing guest ales from regional breweries – there is a cocktail menu that ranges from simple classics to seasonal specials. The bar is known for its cask ale tradition, and beer lovers appreciate the chance to discover new varieties during the regular ale festivals. For cocktail enthusiasts, the pub offers a straightforward yet flavorful selection that pairs well with the music and evening ambiance. On weekends, drinks are often served in plastic cups to ensure safety in the lively environment.

Experience nightlife in Nottingham

The service is typical of Wetherspoon: guests order at the bar or via an app, and food is then brought to the table. The staff is friendly and efficient, though it can get a bit hectic during peak times – such as in the evenings or after events in the city. The pub is wheelchair accessible and offers Wi-Fi, making it appealing to various visitor groups, from students to families and tourists exploring Nottingham's attractions like the castle or the City of Caves. Cleanliness is regularly monitored, and the bar has received high ratings for food hygiene.

Was honestly surprised that this Spoons had music playing, got cocktails and enjoyed them as always. You know what you're in for when it's spoons and it's cheap food and cheap drinks so passes all around.

The security guards were rude, arrogant and had no manners to deal and talk. I showed a document as Id proof which was not acceptable, I understood the fact and was going away but the guard started talking rubbish.

The gate staff was immensely rude. He has absolute no sense of talking to customers. He has no control over his tongue. Even though we were extremely polite and obeying regarding the rules yet he just spoke everything which was against humanity.

3 of us went to this pub , waited patiently for a table as the place was packed, finally got a table and proceeded to order food and drinks, whilst waiting for the food we asked if there was a place we could have a cigarette as none of us had been before, we were shown a exit door so we went out , the door was locked after us leaving us to walk around to the front of the building, we went to go back inside and was stopped by the very rude door men who abruptly told us they were too busy and we wasn’t allowed back in they said we had to wait 15 minutes despite being told we had already got a table and we were waiting for food - very hostile door men who actually said the manager told them we couldn’t go back in- I asked why they just said no - I asked for manager name and was laughed at and was told they didn’t know his name , eventually a young lady came out and brought us back in as our food was getting cold . Awful treatment we received- door men need serious re training, very rude and actually pushed a young man down the steps right into myself- will never return to this place , was treated like a criminal

Always an excellent cask, real ale available. It is a big place, like the majority, if not all Wetherspoons pubs & it was packed making it quite difficult to find a table. Had a gourmet steak on “Steak Night”, which was cooked to perfection, but did have some gristle in it.

Unbelievable experience though I'd expect nothing less from wetherspoons a brand we all admire and trust! Our work acquaintance Lucy wasnt the biggest fan of the paloma but I think she's just fussy! Picturesque location and setting especially on a student night, will go again!

Lloyds is a decent place for a pint. They have a outside garden for smoking, multi levels to get away from a crowd, they do food and cocktail pitchers for £8:40 which you can't argue with. So if you want cheap and cheerful, head to lloyds as you won't be disappointed.
